JonOne began doing graffiti at the age of 17 in the streets of Harlem, inspired by tagged subway trains and hip-hop culture. In 1984, he founded the 156 All Starz crew, a pioneering group in New York's graffiti scene. In 1987, he moved to Paris, where his work evolved from street art to abstract painting on canvas.
